Acts 20:35 I have shewed you all things how that so labouring ye ought to support the week, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.
Let me begin by wishing each of you mothers, and especially my mom and my wife, a very Happy Mother’s Day. With that said, I will get right into my post.
I am writing this because of an individual that I have met this year a couple of times from Myrtle Beach, SC. Her name is Barb Mains and over the last 25 plus years she has helped, in some way or another, probably half of the families in her county and surrounding counties and even several states. I have recently become acquainted with her through a friend of my mother in law and who is friends with Barb’s niece in Swannanoa, NC. Both of these ladies work full-time as volunteers with whatever support they can come up with. Both will be very quick to tell you that “If there is a need, God will always provide.
I have been in food ministry since 2002 and I have got some stories to tell of how God has provided such as the New Covenant Kitchen in Harlan, Kentucky. In 1999, God burnt it down only to build it bigger. And there is also the time that between Monday and Thursday in less than a week, God increased the food in the Operation Outreach food ministry from less than a pickup load to a 28 foot trailer load. In mission work, you kind of get used to God doing amazing things and making something out of nothing so much that you begin to expect it. It’s not that you take it for granted but you just begin to accept by faith the fact that our God specializes in impossibilities. That is what makes talking to both Barb and her niece Donna so encouraging. Both are always looking for one more hungry kid and their families that they can help feed. Barb has seen her ministry expand from her and a friend getting food from anyone and everyone they could and using their cars to deliver it all over Horry County to a growing warehouse with several vans and closed utility trailers. One of the amazing things about Help 4 Kids in Myrtle Beach, SC is that she has been doing mission work for so long that everyone from individuals to businesses are more than willing to donate anything they can. Some have to sell their stuff to her due to corporate regulations but are often as generous as they can get by with. One of the things that makes her ministry so popular in the Grand Strand area, is because everyone knows that her ministry is comprised of all volunteers. I mean all, including her. No one draws a dime for anything they do from backpacks with school supplies to food boxes to her backpack buddies program providing food on Fridays in backpacks to make sure kids have food over the weekend. She has provided everything from furniture to food and clothes to appliances. Her office wall is decorated with pictures of hundreds of smiling kids and their families that she has helped over the years. She insist that it is a calling on her life to help others and doesn’t look at it as charity as much as she does just caring for people and showing God’s love. It is wonderful to see a faith-based ministry grow to the point hers has and continues to. Although you would expect someone with her accomplishments to be a little arrogant and proud but it is quite the contrary. The more people who God allows her to help and make a difference in their lives, the more humble she seems to be. Oh, did I mention that she is now in her seventies and still working every day and weekends when needed. We have all heard it said that “Little is much when God is in it.” It is amazing how much he can make out of a little faith and a little effort. To see all that does to help her community and anyone that is hungry, homeless, broken, or destitute, makes it really easy to believe the stories of the loaves and fishes and Jesus feeding the multitudes with a little boy’s lunch. God is still doing miracles all over the place but for the most part, we have just gotten too busy to notice.
Apparently, all of that love for her fellow-man is contagious because the satellite operation of Help 4 Kids is based in Swannanoa, NC and operated as I mentioned by her sister-in-law. There is no telling where you might find either of them from Sneedville, TN. To anywhere between Myrtle Beach and Swannanoa. They have helped ministries including H.O.P.E. Ministries, and others as far away as West Virginia and even hurricane and flood relief not only in South Carolina but other places as well.
I just was so impressed with both of these ladies and the work that they do that I figured it would encourage you all to know that there are still people like that in the world. I hope you have enjoyed reading this as much as I have enjoyed writing it. Have a blessed day in the Lord!!!
