TAKING THE MANTLE

1 Kings 19:19 “…and Elijah passed by him, and cast his mantle upon him.
Will you take the mantle? Those that have passed before us left a godly heritage in our care as did those before them. Heritage is something reserved for one. Truly ours has been reserved for us but what will we do with it? In what kind of shape will we leave it to our descendants? Will it be as good as we received or a little worse for wear? Each of us must ask ourselves this question. Elisha received a heritage that he soon came to appreciate. Unlike plowing the fields, this mantle had eternal consequences. As Elisha walked with the prophet, he gained a sincere desire for more of the same. So great was his desire that when offered anything, he desired only one thing; a double portion of Elijah’s spirit.
As with any God-given gift, there are requirements and conditions to be met. Romans 11:29 says, “For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance” while Romans 12:6 states, “Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us…” There is a lot of work to be done for the Lord and it takes people the Lord has bestowed gifts upon to accomplish the task at hand. Jesus said in John 4:35, “…look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.” There is little time remaining before the Lord’s return. Someone must take the mantle! No time for indecision, souls hang in the balance. The mantle is before us, our heritage behind us, and eternity looms closer on the horizon with each passing day. Will the gift die with us or ignite a fire of desire in our soul to leave it better than we found it? Will it cause us to embrace the challenges of tomorrow or shirk the responsibilities of today? Our godly heritage is at risk of being lost and forgotten.
As it begins to gather dust, just lying there; will we be the ones to take it up? Elijah performed eight miracles while Elisha,  with the double portion of Elijah’s spirit from the Lord, performed sixteen. Why? Because he took up the mantle. What can God accomplish with us?  Who will cross our path today in need of a miracle from the Lord?  Take up the mantle.
