“THE MORE THINGS CHANGE…” Andy Hollifield 11-25-18
Ecclesiastes 1:9 The thing that hath been, is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.
This day, November 25th, has always been an important day historically speaking. In 1783 in New York City, the British military departed the last position they occupied in the United States. During this time, Annapolis, Maryland was the temporary capital of the United States. In 1867, Alfred Nobel patented dynamite. In 1905 the first ad for a radio was released. In 1963, accused presidential assassin Lee Harvey Oswald was shot and killed by Dallas strip club owner Jack Ruby in the basement of the Dallas PD while being transferred. Also in 1963, President John F. Kennedy was laid to rest 3 days after his assassination in Dallas. In 1999, a 6-year-old Cuban refugee named Elian Gonzales was rescued off of the Florida coast. The next year, Attorney General under President Clinton and Miami native, Janet Reno had this young boy taken by the US military from the home of his Miami relatives. On a lighter note, in 1914 baseball slugger Joe DiMaggio was born.
Also on this day, it has always been one month before Christmas. It has also in some years, been known as Black Friday. There is also wars throughout the world, lots of folks have problems, and obituary columns have plenty of write-ups for someone’s departed family members. Many folks received devastating news about their health or that of family members and friends. Still others received joyous news that their families were growing or would be in a few months. There have also been many births that have taken place on this date in history. Oh yeah, the important thing that has never changed throughout history is that God is still on the throne and in spite of what we might think, he still has everything under control.
I wrote all of the historical events to prove what Ecclesiastes 1:9 said hasn’t changed. There have always been major events, wars, famine, and anything else you can name. My point is that there is no need to get excited. If you are a child of God, you have known from reading God’s word that these things would happen. They always have and always will. History repeats itself and that doesn’t seem to change. The title, “The more things change, the more they stay the same.” Two more things that haven’t changed. The fact that God loves you and gave his Son who gave his life for lost humanity. Also, the fact that no matter what we face, his grace is still sufficient and his strength is made perfect in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). “For I am the Lord, I change not…(Malachi 3:6) and “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). Well, I guess that’s more than two.
With those last few facts in mind, we should be encouraged. The world may change but our God doesn’t! In this upside down and backwards world, we have an absolute truth to hold onto. The anchor of our soul and our help and deliverer as well as our Savior; Jesus Christ. He is our shield, glory, and “The lifter up of mine head” (Psalms 3:3). The more things change; the more he stays the same. Have a blessed day in the Lord!!!
