IT COULD ALWAYS BE WORSE

IT COULD ALWAYS BE WORSE                                                                                              Andy Hollifield 11-30-17

We have all heard the old saying; “If life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” That was just another way of saying “Make the most out of a bad situation.” I just kind of thought that I would share a few encouraging old sayings with you. Sometimes we get wrapped up in our own stuff and forget that there are people who are hurting and really in need of a lift whether it be an old saying, a kind word or even just a pleasant smile. I hope that maybe something in this post will find its way into your heart if you are down and help you see that it could always be worse. Well there you go; that’s two of them already.

It is true that it could always be worse. When I was driving a truck, customer relations was a key part of the job and the success of the company. Management seemed to think it was “numbers” that made the company successful. As drivers, and most of us longer than the company had been in existence, we realized that if you take care of the customers the numbers will take care of themselves. When I would walk into a stop and especially if someone seemed a little frazzled and out of sorts, I would often say, “Smile; it can’t be that bad, and if it is; it will get better or get over, it always does guaranteed.” Just that kind of greeting would put them a little bit at ease and if it didn’t, they would reject your optimism and begin to tell you about their day. That served a purpose because they had been able to vent for a couple of minutes because they didn’t have to fear reprisals from me. Just a little bit of joy and pleasantness could often change someones demeanor and improve their day as well as mine. When you stop and think about it, pretty much any situation you are in could always be worse. Even when you do have a bad day, you can always think of a way it could have been worse. Even when my dad died, it could have been worse. My mom could have passed too. Job lost his whole family within moments as well as his livestock and personal wealth. Yet, do you remember his response: “Naked came I out of my mother’s womb and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” So you think you’ve had a bad day. Yet it says in Psalms 118:24 “This is the day that the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” It could always be worse.

There was one that we heard in sports often: “Winners never quits, and quitters never win.” That is definitely a true saying although we sometimes wonder why it seems the wicked never suffer. Isn’t it funny how that when you have struggled through something and it is finally resolved, you wind up feeling far better and more encouraged than if you had of quit?

Here’s another one for you, “Every cloud has a silver lining.” Do you know what it is that makes that dark cloud have a silver lining? It is because the sun is shining brightly behind that cloud. When that occurs, I dare say that our mind is diverted from that dark cloud and we just begin to look at the silver lining, we forget about the storm that had been going to start with and just see the beauty of the cloud that once had us fearful.

I am sure that everyone has heard this one, “There’s always a light at the end of the tunnel.” I know the jokes about it being a train but if we look for the positive side of things we will find it. Some tunnels may be longer than others but do you know what happens in a tunnel? At some point as you walk into it, you go far enough till you are no longer walking into it but out of it.

What about this one? “If you don’t succeed, try, try again!” I doubt there is anybody that hasn’t heard that one and it can almost make you feel like a failure. If you get to focusing on some of that junk, and looking at all the times you didn’t succeed, this saying can have the opposite effect and get you so worried about not succeeding that you will begin to fail.

Well, I guess that is enough for one day. But go back and read them again. The more you look at them with a positive attitude, the more it will affect your whole mood and before you know it, not only will you feel better, you will start having a positive effect on those around you. I hope you have found something that will help you and remember, it could always be worse. Have a blessed day in the Lord!!!
