THE MIRACLE OF LIFE

THE MIRACLE OF LIFE                                                                                                                  Andy Hollifield 1-10-18

Genesis 2:7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Psalms 127:3-5 Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. (4) As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are the children of the youth. (5) Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.

Psalms 139:13-18 For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb. (14)I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. (15) My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. (16) Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them. (17) How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, Oh God! how great is the sum of them! (18) If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee.

Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

Ephesians 6:4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

If you are reading this post, you have probably been reading my post for the past few weeks and knew that our ministry was helping an expectant mother find a home. Well, last night at long last, I finally got to hold the reward of all of that effort. That was good enough but as I sat there holding him, I began to think about the miracle of life. That little feller that was so perfectly formed in every detail right down to his long skinny fingers; who else but God could do that? No one but God can. Those little features of that baby had been formed over the last nine months by the hand of the Lord.

Sometimes we get caught up in living and forget about life and the one that gives it. That life that comes from God. He holds our next breath and all of the ones past, present, and future in his hands. If he withholds the next one, we will go to meet him. I got reminded again of how fragile life really is. As I held him and looked into his face, once again I realized how dependent he was on those around him. Capable of doing nothing on his own, he relies on others to meet his needs. He has no say in the matter but can only cry out when he wants or needs something. As I sat there with his little hand wrapped around my thumb, again an old familiar thought crossed my mind: How could anyone harm something so precious as that little baby in its innocence. Little did I know when I was seven and eight years old and throughout my childhood, that my love for babies even then was just training for the future. What an honor to have bestowed upon us by an almighty God, to have the privilege to care for his heritage. To be able to take care of one of God’s tiny creations. Just as much human as you and I but unable to take care of its own needs, and God has entrusted us with the responsibility to care for them. As some of the verses I listed above tell us, we have a responsibility not only to meet the physical needs but also the spiritual needs of our children. They may not understand the importance of everything right away but as they get older it will begin to sink deep into the recesses of their soul and they will eventually see the need to turn to God.

As I was writing this, I began to think about how dependent we are on Christ, especially when we first get saved. Not necessarily knowing what we need in all of our situations, if we could do like that baby and just cry out to the Lord, we would save ourselves a lot of grief. If we could only learn that it was God that created us in the womb and he knows what we have need of even better than we do. Just as a baby has one place to go for their physical nourishment, so do we for our spiritual nourishment. The miracle of life and God’s creation are beyond comprehension but an even greater miracle occurred when each one of us got born again. Hopelessly lost in our sin with no hope of being delivered, “But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, (5) Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace are ye saved;) (6) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: (7) That in ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. (8) For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: (9) Not of works, lest any man should boast (Ephesians 2:4-9).

The gift of God. That marvelous grace; free to whosoever will take it just because he loved us. Oh, I saw the miracle of life by one more baby coming into this world, although I wasn’t in the room when he was born. I was there the night I was born. I can’t remember it but God can. I can remember the other miracle of life, that second birth, that night, he performed the real miracle of life when he saved my soul. Have a blessed day in the Lord!!!
