SOMETHING I CAN FEEL Andy Hollifield 1-30-17
A statement was made in my hearing the other day and I am not sure who said it or where I was. The statement was something to the effect of “I’m glad I have something I can feel”. I began to think about that and I am trying to find scripture pertaining to it. I am thankful that the presence of God IS something you can feel. I have always believed that when someone as big as God moves in your heart you can’t help but feel it. I find in 1 Kings 8:10-11 “And it came to pass, when the priests were come out of the holy place, that the cloud filled the house of the Lord, (11) So that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud: for the glory of the Lord had filled the house of the Lord.” That don’t happen near often enough but I love it when it does. It is more than just emotionalism. When the Holy Ghost of God begins to overshadow you with his presence, it is definitely something you can feel. I am glad that when I am right on track where God wants me to be when preaching a message, that I can begin to feel his presence before I am even finished reading my scripture. Sometimes it may be a testimony from another saint or maybe a song from the choir or someone else, but I thank God that he allows us to feel his presence. I cannot even begin to imagine trying to worship a God I couldn’t feel. How would you ever know for sure if he was present if you couldn’t feel him. I have stood in the place where these priests stood when I have felt his glory come down so strong I couldn’t even preach. There is nothing like being so overcome with his presence that you can’t do anything but stand and cry and maybe raise up hands to God. Now that is true heartfelt worship. I have heard the scoffers say that it is just emotion but I would point out a fact to them. Have you ever felt like someone was watching you only to find out they were? You feel it because it is real. It is the same way with worshipping God. The only difference is that it is not an uneasy feeling with the presence of God if you have been born again. Luke 1 tells the story of Jesus and says “he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb.” I find in the book of Matthew that the woman with the issue of blood that touched the hem of his garment, felt inside her body that she had been healed. The cripples that he healed, they felt their bones receive strength and stood up. Acts 1:8 promises that “ye shall recieve power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you.”That sounds like it has got something that can be felt doesn’t it. Acts 2:3 says “And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. (4) And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” They saw it and then it sat upon each of them and filled them. 1 John 2:20 “But ye have an UNCTION from the Holy One, and ye know all things.” An unction is defined as anything smeared on such as an ointment or salve. Those are usually medicines applied in a specific matter for a specific purpose. You can feel an unction from God. When God puts something on you, he applies the right kind of medicine to fix what’s ailing you and it don’t take long before you can feel it start working. It says in Matthew 17 that the disciple heard a voice come out of a cloud and they were afraid. Just like he always does, When Jesus saw this he came to them and said “be not afraid”. Fear is definitely something we can feel. The shepherds were definitely afraid when the angels appeared to them until they told them the news about Jesus birth. John 12:32 says, “And I, if I be lifted up from the earth , will draw all men unto me.” That drawing, convicting power of God is definitely something you can feel. That verse is quite possibly the most important verse we have mentioned. Heaven will be populated because of this verse. If you have ever been born again, it is because you have felt the drawing power of God. Again, I am glad it is something you can definitely feel. If you ever feel it you will know it. You would do well to heed to it and surrender yourself to him. You will know when he is drawing you. It is a feeling of uneasiness and urgency. Uneasiness because he is at that point showing you that you are a sinner and urgency because you then realize that God’s Spirit will not always strive with man.(Genesis 6:3).
As I wrote this post I realized it was a lot harder to write than I realized. The reason being because salvation is not based upon feeling but upon fact accessed by faith. The fact is that Jesus died for you and will forgive you of all your sins if you have faith enough to believe him. More feelings will come when you receive forgiveness and you feel the weight of the world lift off of you and you realize that he has made you a new creature. If you feel that drawing that you just can’t get away from, don’t run away but run to him. He will be waiting for you with open arms. Here is another fact for you; you will never get so low down that God doesn’t love you. Have a blessed day in the Lord!!!
