ONE OF A KIND Andy Hollifield 2-25-18
Matthew 13:54 And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these might works?
Mark 1:22 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.
Mark 2:12 And immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them all; insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion.
Mark 4:41 And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?
Mark 6:2 And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands?
Luke 4:22 And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Josephs son?
Luke 4:32 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power.
John 7:46 The officers answered, Never man spake like this man.
Astonished—-(1) to fill with sudden and overwhelming surprise or wonder; amaze
Gracious——-(1) pleasantly kind, benevolent, and courteous. (2) Merciful or compassionate
One of a kind. That may be one of the best ways that Jesus can be described. Of course “God’s perfect lamb” and “My Savior and redeemer” are the very best ways to describe him. Just to tell you a little more about why words like astonished and marvelled and wondered were used as much as they were when talking about Jesus’ work, keep reading and I will share a few examples of the things he has done. According to a website I was reading on, there were 37 named miracles done by Jesus while on earth. Keep in mind that John 21:25 says, “And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.” If you consider the fact that Jesus’ ministry was technically only about 3 1/2 years long, that is almost one miracle a month besides all of the others talked about in John 21. The number 37 in scripture according to the same site, refers to “the word that comes directly from Almighty God.” I believe that is pretty accurate because the thing Jesus done came directly from the Lord.
I just wanted to look at these few scriptures just to make a point. If you look, every time Jesus did something, it was noteworthy. “What manner of man is this…? We never saw it on this fashion. Whence hath this man these things? They were astonished at his doctrine. He taught them as one having authority. Never man spake like this man.” What an accurate description of our Lord! And when you think of all the people that he healed and preached to and had compassion on, it would be impossible to know just how many people were helped directly by him. In Acts 17 Paul and Silas were accused of turning the world upside because they wouldn’t back down from preaching the gospel of Christ and proclaiming him as their king.
I just wanted to mention these scriptures and mention that they all have one thing in common other than the fact that they all were made possible by the Lord; they are all to the benefit of the person involved on the receiving end of the miracle. They weren’t done to make a name for Jesus and his ministry but only because Jesus had compassion on those that needed a miracle in their lives. The scriptures above say basically the same things. There wasn’t anyone like Jesus. I want to tell you, there still isn’t, never has been, and never will be. Nobody ever talked like him speaking with authority and no one ever did the things he did. No one ever had the wisdom that Jesus had or spoke with such grace as he spoke with. It’s still that way. Never before has anyone been able to take a heart of stone and replace it with a heart of flesh. No one else has ever touched blind eyes and made them see. No one else has ever spoke a word and caused a crippled man to walk. No one else has ever had such virtue that a woman could touch his clothes and be healed. No one else has ever put his fingers in a deaf man’s ears and spit on the ground and touched the man’s tongue and the man’s hearing and speech be restored. Nobody else has stood in front of a grave and called forth the dead and caused them to live again. No one else has ever taken the hand of a dead girl and told her to rise up and she did. Nobody else has ever spoke to the wind and waves and told them to be still and have them immediately calm down. No one else has ever walked on top of the water. No one else has ever gave a command and filled a net so full of fish that it broke. No one else has ever sent a man to fish and told him when he caught one it would have money in its mouth. No one else has ever been baptized and had the heavens open and a voice speak as a dove lit on his shoulder. No one else has ever been seen transfigured, talking with men that had long since been dead. No one else has talked to devils and commanded them to come out of a person and have them enter into 3000 pigs and drive them mad to the point where they ran off a cliff and into the sea and drowned. Nobody else ever took a few loaves of bread and a few fish and broke them and blessed them and fed thousands till they were full and then had leftovers. No one else ever spoke a word and healed a man of his leprosy. No one else ever cast seven devils out of a woman. No one else has ever been able to tell someone their thoughts without first speaking to them. No one else has ever been born of a virgin. And most of all, no one else ever volunteered to leave his heavenly kingdom to be a human sacrifice for fallen man. No one else has ever got up from the grave and brought a bunch with him. No one else could ever restore fellowship between God and man. Nobody else has ever been able to forgive someone’s sins, only him and his Father.
These are just the things he did in the bible. I couldn’t even begin to tell you the things he has done in my life that no one else could do. I am sure that he has done things in your lives that you have never seen him do before and that no one else could have done. I hope that this hasn’t seemed monotonous but sometimes we all just need a little reminding of all that Jesus has done and the fact that no one else could have done the things he did. He makes the impossible possible and the unlikely come to pass. So no matter what you may need in your life, Jesus is the one that can do what nobody else can do. He truly is “one of a kind.” Have a blessed day in the Lord!!!
